Standedge Tunnel

Standedge Tunnel

Visitors to the Peak District have the opportunity to take a trip on a barge through the longest canal in the UK, Standedge tunnel that extends to over 3 miles.  Standedge tunnel cuts through the heart of the Pennines and is classed as one of the 7 wonders of the British Waterways.

A barge trip through the canal tunnel takes around 30 minutes and allows visitors to see one of Victorian Britain’s most spectacular architectural feats.  Guides are also on hand to provide both historical and geographical information about both the canal and the surrounding area.  It is also possible for visitors to take their own boat through the canal, which requires visitors to book a time slot for their passage in advance.  There is also a recently refurbished pub/restaurant at one end of the tunnel that offers a range of meals as well as a play park for children.
