Castleton Village is one of the most popular villages in the whole of the Peak District due to it providing visitors with a gateway to the national park. The village itself falls within the boundaries of Derbyshire and is situated to the West of the Hope valley. Peakshole water flows through the town. Castleton is very small in size with a population of fewer than 650 people.
Castleton was a prosperous lead mining town prior to it becoming a tourist town, and the town has one of the oldest lead mines in the country, Odin mine. Odin mind is within walking distance of the town and is located about a mile away from it. Mining in the area has been pretty extensive and a range of mines around Castleton have been opened up to the general public as caverns. These include Blue John Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Peak Cavern.
Road access from Castleton is along a road known as the Winnats Pass due to the narrow and steep terrain it traverses. The road is not suitable for larger vehicles and visitors with caravans are strongly advised to take a different route. A larger road connects the town of Hope with Sheffield, though means that those heading west will experience long delays.
There is a small bus station in Castleton with services available hourly to Sheffield. There are also buses to other locations within the Peak District such as Tideswell and Bakewell. Buxton is also accessible once a day by bus. The closest railway station can be found in hope which is about a 5 minutes drive from Castleton. Trains arrive in Hope from Sheffield.
Castleton is a draw for tourists for a number of reasons. The first of these is the wide range of facilities on offer in the town which include a number of pubs and Inns, which provide accommodation for visitors. There are also several outdoor shops in the town which are popular with those purchasing last minute supplies before heading out into the hills. Popular walking routes in the area include Cave Dale, Mam Tor and the Winnats Pass. There are also several caves in the area that are becoming increasingly popular with tourists.
